Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck
Philippe Starck is unlike any designer I have ever seen or heard about before.  His designs range from simple elegant settings to extravagant, over the top designs.  Not only does he produce incredible interiors, Starck also produces many unique and innovative furniture, lamps and other products.  He was educated in Paris at the Ecole Camondo and in 1986, he founded his first design firm.  This design firm specialized in inflatable objects.  Starck has worked independently as an interior and product designer since 1975.  Some of his most famous and recognizable objects include the translucent ghost chair, his gorgeous black chandelier, goofy gnome tables and quirky gun stand lamps.  His designs are very eclectic and many are very unusual.  Some products he has created include a slim household juicer, a stylized toothbrush and a line of Starck watches with Fossil Inc. watch company.  Some of his most well known interiors are not usually residential but rather, commercial.  His famous work includes restaurant and hotel interiors.  Starck’s use of materials, furniture, art and color all set his designs apart from any other modern day designer.  His eclectic, sort of ludicrous motifs give his designs a unique, innovative and gorgeous style.

Solution Statement
Finishes selected for this law office were chosen based on the designs of Philippe Starck.  Starck has a variety of design elements he uses in a space including simple elegant spaces as well as over the top extravagant spaces.  To keep a simple yet beautiful finish in this law office, a stained concrete floor will be used to contrast other more detailed features of the design.  Simple white walls can be found throughout the space except in the hallway where there will be tufted wall panels inspired by Starck.  To add a dramatic element to some spaces in the law office, a black ceiling will be applied to set off the clean white walls. Countertops in the break room will be simple yet elegant black granite.  The stains of the concrete on the floors will differ in separate spaces.  In the offices and conference room the concrete will be stained a white color while in the reception, break room and paralegal offices, the stain will be a darker grey.

Calculations:
Reception Room: 25 sq. ft. x 20 sq. ft. = 500 total sq. ft.
Corridor: 7 sq. ft. x 60 sq. ft. = 420 total sq. ft.
Paralegal Space: 13 sq. ft. x 50 sq. ft. = 650 total sq. ft.
Break Room: 10 sq. ft. x 15 sq. ft. = 150 total sq.ft.
Total Sq. Ft. needed = 1,720 (5 gallons)
Installation: Concrete acid stain solutions can be applied by spraying, brushing or rolling. The best method of application is however, to spray the solution with a plastic sprayer. Avoid puddles and brush out pooled stain. Allow stained areas to dry evenly. A second coat can be applied after 4 hours, if desired, to darken the reaction.
Maintenance: To keep interior stained surfaces protected, apply a new coat of sealer every year or two, or as necessary. When you begin to notice that water no longer beads up on the surface, it's time to reseal.
Sustainability: One of the best qualities of acid-stained concrete flooring is its resistance to wear and tear. Acid-stained concrete floors simply do not wear out.  They have compressive strengths in excess of 4,500 pounds per square inch. In addition to this, they are unlike other floor coverings, which may warp, buckle, flake, or grow mold and mildew.  Even more so, they are inflammable, and their finishes are ultraviolet light-resistant. Finally, when they are installed properly, acid-stained concrete floors do not chip, peel, discolor, or fade.

Paint
Color: Extra White

Calculations:
Extra White Paint:
Reception Room: 20x10 = 200 sq. ft.
                   25x10 = 250 sq. ft. x 2 walls = 500 sq. ft.
Conference Room:
20x10 sq.ft x 2 walls = 400 sq. ft.
Break Room:
101x10 sq. ft. x 2 walls = 200 sq. ft.
15x10 sq. ft. x 2 walls = 300 sq. ft.
Total Sq. Ft. needed= 2,300 sq. ft. (5 gallons)
Color: Black Emerald

Calculations:
Black Emerald Paint: Ceilings
Conference Room: 25x15 sq. ft. = 375 sq. ft.
Four 15x15 offices: 900 sq. ft.
Total sq. ft. needed= 1,275 sq. ft. (4 gallons)
Installation: Wash if necessary. Dirt and grime interferes with the paints adhesion. Remove this mess with general house hold cleaner then rinse. For heavy deposits, especially grease. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying primer or paint. Repair any holes or cracks. Drywall Repair can be tricky, but small repairs are easily accomplished by most people. Rolling paint is the most common interior painting technique. Rolling is more labor intensive, but requires the least investment in tools and uses less paint
Maintenance: Wash mildewed areas with a solution of one part household bleach and three parts water. This will destroy mildew and bleach stains caused by mildew growth. Apply solution by brush or a garden sprayer apparatus. Heavy mildew may require additional applications, and scrubbing may be required. Flush area with clean water (before the solution dries) to remove bleach solution. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Be sure to use protective clothing and goggles to avoid contact with the solution. Do not mix bleach with other chemicals.
Sustainability:  Little to no Odors, Low VOCs, Reduced chemicals
Wall Panel Fabric
Color: Patina Rouge

Installation: Apply fabric to a tufted panel.  Secure panels to wall in desired pattern.
Maintenance:      -Thorough bi-directional vacuum
                              - Pre-spot & pre-condition

                              -Repair seams as needed
Sustainability:  Panels can be disassembled after use.  The fabric from these panels can be reused or recycled.
Calculations:
Corridor Wall:
85x 10 sq. ft. = 850 sq. ft.
34 5x5 panels
850 sq. ft. = 284 yds.
284 yds x $14.24 = $ 4,044.16

Countertop

Principles and Elements Design

The Principles and Elements of design should always be considered while creating a space.  These elements give the room balance and control while adding interest, if used correctly.

The space pictured above uses the elements and principles to create a harmonious space.  Very straight lines are used in the space to give it a clean and finished look.  The form of the furniture and fireplace are very square which ties in nicely with the shapes of some of the rounder accents, including lighting, throughout the space.

Smooth surfaces are used throughout the space with added textures in the rug and with some accessories.  Neutral colors establish an aesthetically pleasing color scheme with bright red as a color of emphasis.

Emphasis is clearly created with the use of color in this space.  The eye is drawn to the bright red color on both the wall and the accent pillows.  Having the same neutral tones throughout the space helps to unify the space, while the red accents give the room variety.
Rhythm is created in this space with the repetition of certain features.  The repetition of things like the three lighting fixtures along with the three square cut outs on the emphasis wall provide a good rhythm for the space.

There is very minimal pattern in the photo which provides balance.  If everything was patterned it would be too busy and would distract from the design.  Instead, the designer has used very simple and solid colors and patterns and the added a piece of artwork that has pattern on it.  The eye also could be drifted to this piece as emphasis, but it implies variety into the room.

Everything in this space is proportionate to all other items in the room.  No item is scaled way too big or way to small to flow with the rest of the space.  Scale and proportion are big considerations when designing.  Keeping the elements and principles of design in essential when creating or designing a space.  If you consider all of these principles and elements you can design a space with enough of each element to generate one harmonious and beautiful space.
